Continuing Education

It shall be the policy of the Continuing Medical Education Department of Memorial Health University Medical Center to be committed to developing, implementing, and evaluating educational opportunities and initiatives to assist practicing physicians, pharmacists, nurses, advanced practice providers, and other health care professionals as appropriate to improve patient safety, enhance clinical outcomes, and advance patient-centered care and scientific evidence.

By developing and implementing educational activities, we will enhance competence for physicians’, pharmacists’, and nurses’ performance in patient care, medical knowledge, practice-based learning and improvement, interpersonal and communication skills, professionalism, and systems-based practice by promoting lifelong learning for the practicing and developing healthcare provider. We will also meet the needs of our healthcare provider staff as well as regional and national physicians. Our activities will usually occur within state boundaries and jointly provided activities will fall within the mission of Memorial Health University Medical Center.

Our activities are available to physicians, pharmacists, nurses, medical educators and clinical researchers at the local, regional, and national level. However, the development and basis of these CME activities is primarily on the specific strategic goals, initiatives and educational needs of the faculty and healthcare providers at Memorial Health University Medical Center. Participation of non-physician health care professionals associated with MHUMC is encouraged when appropriate. MHUMC offers a wide range of CME activities to meet the needs of all healthcare team members in the local, regional and national areas. The educational design and methods for CME activities are selected based on identified need, content to be addressed and expected results of the activity.

ACGME Core Competencies

For all MHUMC activities, content is based on six ACGME core competencies, which include:

• clinical care
• medical knowledge
• professionalism
• communication skills
• practice-based improvement
• and systems-based practice

Content

With the ACGME core competencies used as a platform, content is developed based on the needs of our physician audience and frequently includes, but is not limited to the following:

• the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease
• efficient and cost-effective healthcare delivery
• medical ethics
• clinical research
• patient safety
• professionalism for all clinical specialties

In order to achieve its goals and provide quality educational activities, the CME Department will only collaborate on jointly provided activities that are developed in the best interest of and compatible with the mission of Memorial Health University Medical Center. The MHUMC CME Department fulfills its mission of advancing the healthcare team competence and clinical performance.

Expected Results

MHUMC is committed to a CME activity with the expected result of changes in the areas of:

• strategies or skills, and abilities to perform a task
• perceived self-efficacy in clinical practice
• performance
• patient health outcomes

In order to meet the needs of all physicians in the MHUMC network, the CME Department will score at least a 4.0 on a 5.0-point scale, in rating “quality” of Memorial Health University Medical Center CME programs on the annual Physician Needs Assessment Survey.

Planning a CME Program

Planning a certified CME activity requires navigating through guidelines, licensing requirements, commercial support regulations, and institutional policies. Our CME team is here to help you through the process. Together, we will ensure that your activity is successful, timely, and of the highest quality.

CME Committee Meetings

Our CME Committee physically usually meets on the third Monday each quarter to review activities, develop strategies for CME activities to meet gaps in physician practice, and discuss opportunities for inter-professional education at Memorial University Medical Center. The meetings begin at 7:30 a.m. in Conference Room C. Applications for CME activities are reviewed prior to the committee meetings on an ongoing basis. All activities should be submitted two months prior to the activity date to ensure approval. Approval cannot occur after the start of the activity. Activities cannot be advertised as pending approval or submitted for approval. All regularly scheduled series (RSS) activities, such as grand rounds, tumor boards and morbidity and mortality meetings, must be reviewed annually.
