Sports Medicine Fellowship

Marvin Sineath, MD
Program Director

Thanks for your interest in our ACGME-accredited sports medicine fellowship program. Launched in 2019, the fellowship program is currently accepting one fellow per year who is residency-trained in family medicine.

The goal of our fellowship is to develop a well-rounded sports medicine physician who has significant experience in:

  • Clinical
  • Team and mass event coverage
  • Scholarly activity

We accomplish these goals with a rigorous and exciting training program.

The sports medicine fellow will see patients in the sports medicine clinic at Memorial Health University Physicians | Family Care East 66th St, which houses the Family Medicine Residency program. The fellow will be precepted by the fellowship director. In the clinic, the fellow will diagnose and treat a broad array of musculoskeletal conditions, including diagnostic and interventional ultrasound injections.

Sports Medicine Clinic - Statesboro

The fellow will gain additional experience by working in a sports medicine clinic with a specialist in Statesboro, GA. This will include diagnostic and interventional ultrasound, as well as various types of injections, including steroids, hyaluronic acid and platelet-rich plasma (PRP).

Orthopedic Clinic - Savannah

A renowned orthopedic practice, located less than a mile from the clinic, will serve as the primary orthopedic clinic for the fellow. The primary preceptor is fellowship trained in orthopedic sports medicine. The fellow will also work with a sports medicine-trained physical therapist at the clinic.

College Football Coverage - Statesboro

The fellow will have the opportunity to provide football coverage and gain training room experience at Georgia Southern University, a NCAA Division 1 team in Statesboro.

High School & College Sports Coverage

The fellow will serve as team physician for a local high school and the Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) throughout the year, providing coverage for many sports. SCAD, a member of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), offers students opportunities to participate in soccer, lacrosse and equestrian events.

Both schools are part of Memorial Health’s sports medicine program, which provides athletic trainers to each school. The fellow will collaborate with the trainer and develop a working sports medicine team.

Community involvement

The fellow will coordinate and participate in pre-participation physicals at local high schools and colleges. The fellow will gain experience covering mass participation events, including the Savannah Rock ‘n Roll Marathon, the Boston Marathon and the national men’s and women’s NAIA lacrosse tournament.

Curriculum

A robust didactics curriculum with protected time prepares the fellow to take and pass the sports medicine certificate of added qualification board exam.

Scholarly activity

The fellow will partner with faculty to present at national meetings, author articles for publication and participate in ongoing grant projects through the fellowship and residency program. The fellow will attend the American Medical Society of Sports Medicine (AMSSM) annual meeting, the Advanced Team Physician Course and AMSSM/OHSU Sports Ultrasound course.
